Sandisk’s My Passport’s 2TB Portable Drive Review + Giveaway

$

The truth is, portable hard drives are now becoming a necessity than an option, especially for people who consume a lot of games and media content.

So, getting a 2TB HDD drive from Sandisk was pure joy!

As far as packaging goes, it is pretty simple, nothing extravagant.

I like that the details on features offered are well presented as most people would get the information at first sight.

Now, inside the box, you get to see the hard drive itself, a USB 3.0 cable and Manuals.

Switching to the drive itself, I like that Western Digital has beveled a stylish wavy texture into the half of the drive that’s home to the powered micro-B USB port and power indicator.

The waves also provide a better grip when holding the drive.

Also, did I mention that the device is quite handy thanks to its slim body?

However, I also noticed that the brushed metal finish portion of the device is a smudge and fingerprint magnet:

It’s also one of the reasons why I was a bit unhappy to see that My Passport didn’t come with a pouch for extra protection.

Now, I use a 2017 MacBook Pro that comes with type-c ports, which also meant that I had to get a type-c adapter to use, something I didn’t have as at the time of this review. Luckily, I also have a Windows PC and as expected, plugging this into a USB port was a breeze.

One thing you might notice, though, is the inclusion of some security features by Western Digital.

For example, you have Western Discovery which allows you to easily access and operate your Western Digital hard drives, it also includes WD Back-up, WD Drive Utilities, WD Security shortcuts and update buttons on its dashboard for easier and centralized access.

The total size of these files were about 300MB, which can be annoying to some people, luckily, they can be deleted from the drive.

As far as performance is concerned. I was able to get a Sequential read speed of 34.0MB/s and a write speed of 31.00MB/s

In layman’s terms, it took exactly 41 seconds to copy a 1.2GB file into the drive and 1 minute 2 seconds to copy the same file from it. The transfer speed when copying from the device are good, but the same could not be said when transferring files to it as it took longer. Nevertheless, these are still respectable transfer speeds at least based on the benchmark scores.

Overall, If you’re a bargain hunter looking for little extra storage, then the 2TB Western Digital My Passport should be on your radar. It is definitely not durable, but that shouldn’t be a problem since you can always get a pouch for it!

GIVEAWAY.

I will be giving away one hard drive to a lucky reader!

To win:

  • You must be following on Instagram, YouTube (Turn on post notification) and Facebook
  • You must be an active commentator on the blog (at least from now until the 30th of January)
  • Drop a comment telling me what you think of this drive and why you need it on this page and also on my Instagram page (Look out for the post later this week).

Good luck guys!

P.S. Winners of the Umidigi A3 giveaway will be announced on Sunday!

Have You Seen Real Life Images of the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus? Well, Here You Go!

While we are counting down to the official launch of the Galaxy S10 lineup, images of the yet to be launched devices have flooded the internet:

The first thing you will notice with the images is the hole-punch design indicating that the S10 will have one front-facing camera, while the S10+ will have two.

Another thing I could tell from the image is the use of Samsung’s ONE UI which is also not surprising.

Switching to the back of the device, we can see that both devices have 3 cameras

I mean:

Since we get 3 cameras on both the S10 and S10+.

I also noticed the lack of a fingerprint sensor which means that Samsung is going the in-display fingerprint route!

And yes, we still get to keep our beloved 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Galaxy S10 lineup will be unveiled on February 20th—less than a month away, but so far, do you like what you see?

Sandisk’s 128GB Ultra MicroSD Card Review.

Whether you need it for a phone, a camera, or some other gadget, buying a microSD card seems like a pretty simple thing to do, right?

Well, at least, not in Nigeria, and this is as a result of the influx of fake products in the country.

Now, Sandisk is one of the first companies to introduce microSD cards with the A1 rating:

…And these Class 10 UHS 1 microSD cards are some of the best options if you are looking for fast performance on a budget.

I got the 128GB SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) variant from Sandisk and the package looks similar to what we saw on My Passport portable drive which had all the information you need right there on the package.

However, one of the telltale signs of buying an original Sandisk card is with the internal package, this one:

Most Sandisk cards come with cellophane cover over the back, which can be quite difficult to remove:

Away from that, you also get a standard SD adapter:

As far as performance is concerned I placed it in my Nokia 7 Plus:

And used the A1 benchmark app to test the performance. At the end of the test, I was able to get a read score of 79.46MB/s and a sequential write score of 50.77MB/s.

Meanwhile, in my CrystalDiskMark testing it managed a sequential read speed of 89MB/s – just a little shy of the 100MB/s SanDisk claims – though write speeds were a more modest 27MB/s.

What this means is that Sandisk’s Ultra cards are perfect for recording full HD video but falls a little short of what you’d require for quality 4K video recording.

So, over to you, what do you think? And what memory card are you currently using?

This is Xiaomi’s Android Go Smartphone. You Like?

$

If I could pick a word to describe Xiaomi’s new Android go device, I’d probably pick:

Now, for a bit of background knowledge, this is Xiaomi’s first Android Go smartphone. So, you get a 5-inch 720p display, a 3,000mAh battery, an 8MP main camera, a 5MP selfie snapper, a Snapdragon 425 chipset (a quad-core chip that indeed tops out at 1.4Ghz), 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, and (of course) Android Go based on Android 8.1.

😩The bezels, though

All for a price tag of $90, that is about N32,000, which is not so impressive, especially when you consider the fact that you can ‘currently’ get the Xiamoi Redmi 6a for N34,000.

Or the Umidigi A3:

Or even this notch-device:

Also, when placed beside other Android Go devices from the likes of iTel, to name a few, you’d realize that Xiaomi’s version of Android Go is still slightly more expensive.

In my opinion, Xiaomi needs to go back to the drawing board because I don’t think they can win the Nigerian market with a bland device (Referring to the looks, specs, and price) like this one!

The Nigerian Tech industry has grown in leaps and bounds over the years. Many innovative ideas, platforms and more have been developed, which have provided more job opportunities. The People of Oshodi: These Pictures Were Taken With the Camon 11 Pro. What Do You Think?

Last year, I made a review of the Tecno Camon 11 pro. Check it out here:

Anyway, I decided to use the Camon 11 pro to show the current situation at Oshodi and the capabilities of the 11 Pro.

For example, I noticed that the pictures taken with the 11 Pro are quite saturated. P.S. The pictures have been downscaled.

As evident with this picture:

And this one. See how vibrant the colors look:

I also like the details the camera brings to the pictures.

Although there are times when I think it’s a bit too much:

The Camon 11 pro’s rear camera also did well in keeping the highlights in check, although the same cannot for the front camera, (check my YouTube videos for samples).

—-

Overall, the images taken with the rear camera turned out okay, with good contrast and lively colors. The dynamic range is surprisingly okay even without the HDR mode, however, I can notice that the images can tend to be over-sharpened, but this isn’t a deal breaker.

So, over to you, what do you think of the quality?

With ever-increasing customer expectations of quick service and near real-time transactional support, United Bank for Africa (UBA) committed resources to Artificial Intelligence (AI) a year ago, birthing Leo, a Banking Chatbot that helps customers carry out key banking transactions anywhere, using mobile devices and personal computers.

Leo can be accessed via Facebook or WhatsApp.

“Our customers are increasingly asking for mobile services that make their lives easier, and Leo is becoming a growing choice for his convenience and personal solutions,” says Austin Abolusoro, who heads Online Banking at UBA.

Leo combines the latest technology in AI; predictive analytics and natural language, to be a virtual financial assistant to customers, who can interact with it any way they choose, including texting or tapping options on their screen. Leo has proven to be an important financial assistant, helping users to search for transactions, view account history and balance, pay bills, as well as track spending trends. Leo is also developing an interest in other aspects of users’ lives and currently helps them to check football scores and weather information. Leo will continue to learn and become more involved in the lives of users to better meet their needs and address their queries.

“As we continue to advance our work on AI-driven developments, it is important that we listen to our users today and further enhance Leo to align to client feedback in order to better meet and anticipate needs and even give them increased value as Leo clocks one,” Abolusoro adds.

This milestone reflects the bank’s continued focus on providing industry-leading digital capabilities as part of its high-tech, high-touch client experience.

Everything learned over the last one year of Leo’s work will help UBA improve on its digital offerings, says Abolusoro, Head of online banking, who assured customers of “nothing short of the very best innovation in the coming months”. Leo is set to become a financial control center for its wide range of users, offering them accessible and intelligent ways to manage their money. Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited Donates Million Dollar Telecommunications Laboratory to Nigeria.

As Nigeria builds up to improve its global ICT development indexes especially with relation to advancements in ICT skills and facilities, there has been a spring up in partnerships between the public and private sector. The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) in 2004 introduced an initiative known as the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), established to offer training to entrepreneurs, young and veteran professionals, promote world-class research and also serve as a tool to drive advocacy and policy developments in Nigeria. With the rise in public-private sector partnerships to develop advanced ICT skills and facilities in Nigeria, the Digital Bridge Institute recently commissioned its world-class GSM/UMTS telecommunications network equipment laboratory in Abuja fully equipped with Optical Fiber Nodes, Wireless Radio Access Nodes and Ultramodern Next-Generation Core Switching Network with an estimated worth of about One Million USD ($1M), all donated by Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited. In attendance at the commissioning were dignitaries from government sectors such as the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Television Authority, the media and representatives from Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited.

\

The chairman, governing board of the Digital Bridge Institute, Engineer Titi Omo-ettu, at the commissioning stated that “the telecommunications laboratory which is donated by Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited represents a leap in the efforts of the institute to provide qualitative hands-on practical telecommunications and ICT training in line with its core mandate of building functional skills.”

This is:

“Especially given that the development of the skilled workforce across all sectors of the economy has become a national priority. We are keenly aware that there is a global shift from natural resources as a basis for national competitiveness to human resources underpinned by knowledge and innovation which has enabled other countries such as China to achieve rapid and sustained economic growth.”

Engineer Titi Omo-ettu further expressed his optimism towards more partnerships with Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria stating that he hopes the partnership established three years ago will further blossom to improve the skills of the Nigerian graduates who need the required skills to find their bearing in the industry.

This is the World’s First Humanoid AI Artist.

The first question you’d probably have when you  see Ai-da is:

That’s because just like Sophia the Robot, Ai-da— named after British mathematician and computer pioneer, Ada Lovelace— looks like a human doppelgänger.

Ai-da

She is the brainchild of art impresario and galleries owner Aidan Meller and is currently the world’s first “AI ultra-realistic robot artist.

According to reports, Ai-da is the first ever robot artist who can draw without any human input. To do this, she uses a microchip in her eye and a pencil in her robotic hand, which is capable of drawing and painting from sight.

Now, I am about to show you one of Ai-da’s sketches, but before I do, promise me you won’t react this way:

With that said, check it out:

Beautiful, right?

Anyway, Ai-Da has a “RoboThespian” body, that features an expressive range of movements, including movable eyes that can make eye contact and follow you around the room, she will also have the ability to talk and respond to questions and will be able to stand upright or sit upright in a chair. Ai-da will also be mixed race in appearance and will be completed this month.

No words on when she will get an official launch date, but reports claim that Ai-da could present her inaugural exhibition “Unsecured Futures” in May at the University of Oxford, and her sketches will go on display in London in November.

From Piggybank to PiggyVest: Check Out Some of the Top Reactions from Nigerians.

Earlier today, Piggybank, online savings and investment platform, announced its evolution from Piggybank.ng to PiggyVest.

A move that a lot of us didn’t expect:

The decision was taken in order to ensure that the services rendered ceaselessly evolve with the needs of their customers. In their words, they are pivoting from a strictly savings platform to a “robust financial platform.” The enhanced platform will offer even more services — including insurance and group investment options — which will be accessible to anyone, regardless of their background, all while maintaining the simplicity and convenience that has been its trademark.

However, it appears that social media is having none of it!

For example, we have those who outrightly think that the name change is a terrible idea:

We also have those who can see the potentials:

As expected, we have more people in support of the old name.

However, the most important thing to note is that the name change will not stop people from using the app – provided they can still get value from the services rendered, the only issue that might arise is with the brand-name’s adoption/usage.

With that said, what do you think?

Last week, I was privileged to attend Oppo’s first meet and greet in the country.

About 30 members of the press from Print, TV, Radio and top online blogs were in attendance. At the event, the PR Manager, OPPO Nigeria, Joseph Adeola, introduced OPPO Mobile to the press, while explaining the global outlook of the company. He further exposed the press to OPPO Mobile’s global operating model, success stories and the entry strategy into the African market.

Following the conversation, the Marketing Manager of OPPO Mobile Nigeria, Nengi Akinola, spoke on the global collateral of the OPPO brand and how they intend to bring the same to the Nigerian market. She went on to speak about the plans for innovation and collaboration that OPPO would be embarking on in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event was the OPPO Marketing Director, Lily Wang, she spoke on the innovations of OPPO and the socio-economic impact that the brand would have on the Nigerian market. She was also clear on the brand promise of OPPO to be consistent, truthful and transparent in all their dealings with the press and in the Nigerian market.

The event closed with questions and answers from members of the press which was expertly answered and attended to by the OPPO officials present.

No words on when Oppo is expected to launch its second device in Nigeria (Recall that they silently launched the Oppo A3s), so I am keeping my fingers crossed on that one.
